Thank you so much for your responses. Each one is very eye-opening for me. You make me want to write!

—Genie Couste

Thanks for such a prompt and professional response to my essay...Your critique helps me to see some blind spots, which I will work on...And your method of critique, so precise and specific, intrigues me.

—Andy Allan

Thank you so very much for your SUPER fast and thoughtful reply. I've been stuck with this piece for almost two years and any revising was to no avail. The ending did not seem right, as you suggested. And some of the images did not fit, such as the tear extinguishing the flame - I like your rephrasing for that part. In summary, all your comments were "right on" and will get me out of this rut! Thank you!

—Beth Krueger

I was amazed and delighted to instantaneously receive your in-depth analysis of my story. To my recollection, it is the best $45 I've ever spent.

—Diane Rau

Writing It Real No-Contest Contest
All Entries Receive a Response from Sheila

Sheila Bender is a big believer in prompts, freewrites and the revision process. Our Winter No-Contest Contest reading deadline is now extended until January 31, 2010 and the revisions deadline (no additional payment) is February 28, 2010:
Step 1 - Read this prompt and do a freewrite based on your associations:
Turn on the radio or television. Or open a book, newspaper or magazine to any page. Write down the first phrase or word you hear or point to. Set a timer for 15 minutes and write what you associate to from the words you heard or read. Repeat the words as a refrain if this helps you.

Step 2 - Submit that freewrite up to four double-spaced pages of prose by January 31, 2010; Sheila emails a detailed response within one week.

Step 3 - Keep your entry as is for the contest or revise it based on Sheila’s response and resubmit by February 28, 2010.

Contest finalists will be judged by a guest editor to be announced. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be notified in March and published in Writing It Real. (We require one time only rights). Winners receive a half-hour consult with Sheila about their writing and/or publishing questions.

I look forward to helping you on your way to finished stories, essays, or poems based on what you have begun in those 15 minutes. You may edit if you’d like, but sometimes you get the most help when you send something you haven’t shaped yet!
